Frequently asked questions
Account
How do I create an SMSGELY account?
Register with your name, business email and a password, then verify your email address using the link we send. After that you can top up your wallet, set up a sender and start sending from the dashboard.
Who is SMSGELY for?
Businesses and organisations in Bangladesh that need to reach people by SMS: shops and e-commerce stores, schools, clinics, NGOs, service companies and developers building websites or apps.
Can I use SMSGELY in dark mode?
Yes. The dashboard supports light and dark mode, and you can switch between them at any time.
How do I import my existing contacts?
Upload a CSV file in Contacts. Bangladeshi numbers written as 01XXXXXXXXX, +8801XXXXXXXXX or with Bangla digits are normalised automatically, and duplicates are detected. You can organise contacts into groups and export them again as CSV.
Sending SMS
What kinds of SMS can I send?
You can send a single SMS, bulk SMS campaigns, SMS to saved contact groups and scheduled SMS. You can also send through the SMS API from your own website or software.
How many characters fit in one SMS?
Plain English text (GSM-7) fits 160 characters in one SMS, or 153 per part when longer. Bangla, emoji and other Unicode text fits 70 characters in one SMS, or 67 per part. Extension characters such as { } [ ] ~ | € count as two in GSM-7.
Why is my English message being counted as Unicode?
It contains at least one character outside the GSM-7 alphabet, often a curly apostrophe, a long dash or an emoji copied from another app. One such character turns the whole message into Unicode, so replace it with a straight quote or a plain hyphen.
Can I send SMS in Bangla?
Yes. Bangla is fully supported and sent as Unicode. Keep messages short where possible, because a Bangla SMS holds 70 characters before it is split into parts.
Can I schedule messages for later?
Yes. Choose a date and time when you create a message or campaign. Scheduled times use Bangladesh time (Asia/Dhaka), and you can cancel a scheduled message before it is sent.
Can I personalise messages with names?
Yes. Templates support variables such as {{name}}, {{mobile}}, {{company}} and {{order_id}}, plus any column from your CSV file, so each recipient receives their own details.
Masking & sender IDs
What is the difference between masking and non-masking SMS?
Masking SMS shows your brand name as the sender, using an approved alphanumeric sender ID. Non-masking SMS is sent from a sender number provided by the platform and needs no approval.
How do I get a masking sender ID?
Request one in Dashboard → Sender IDs. Sender IDs are 3 to 11 characters. Each request shows a status of Pending, Approved, Rejected or Suspended, and we may ask for supporting documents. Only approved sender IDs can send.
Is masking sender ID approval guaranteed?
No. Masking sender IDs are subject to the rules of Bangladeshi mobile operators and the regulator, and requests are reviewed individually. Non-masking SMS is available while a request is pending.
Which sender type is best for OTP messages?
Non-masking SMS is a common choice for one-time passwords and alerts because it needs no approval. Masking works too once your sender ID is approved, and helps customers recognise your brand.
Pricing & billing
How much does an SMS cost?
The cost of a message is the number of parts multiplied by the price per part. Prices can differ for masking and non-masking SMS and for English (GSM-7) and Unicode text. Current rates are listed on the pricing page.
How do I add balance?
SMSGELY uses a prepaid wallet in BDT. Top up through bKash or Nagad and submit the payment details; our staff verify the payment and add the balance. Online payment gateways are planned.
Does my balance expire?
Yes. Each approved recharge is valid for 6 months from the date it is approved. Your oldest balance is used first, each recharge keeps the rate it was bought at, and we remind you by email and in your dashboard 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before any balance expires. Expired balance stays visible in your history but can no longer be used.
Am I charged for failed messages?
No. The cost is reserved when a message is queued and charged only when the provider accepts it. Messages that fail or are rejected before the network accepts them are not charged, and their reservation is released.
What do balance, reserved and available mean?
Balance is the total in your wallet. Reserved is money held for messages that are queued or scheduled but not yet accepted by the provider. Available is what you can still spend on new messages.
Can I download invoices?
Yes. Every transaction is listed in your wallet history, and invoices can be downloaded as PDF from the dashboard.
API & integrations
Does SMSGELY have an SMS API?
Yes. A JSON REST API lets you send single and bulk SMS, check message status, read your balance and sender IDs, manage contacts and receive delivery webhooks. The full API documentation is in your dashboard after you create a free account.
Where do I get an API key?
Create one in Dashboard → Developer → API keys. Choose only the scopes you need, such as sms:send. The full key is shown once, so copy it and store it securely.
Is there a WordPress or WooCommerce plugin?
An official plugin is planned but not available yet. Today you connect WordPress and WooCommerce through the REST API with a short PHP snippet, documented in our developer docs.
How do I avoid sending the same message twice from my code?
Send an Idempotency-Key header with each POST request. If the same key and body are sent again within 24 hours, the original result is returned and no second SMS is sent or charged.
Security & privacy
How are passwords and API keys protected?
Passwords are hashed with argon2id, and API keys are stored only as hashes and shown once when created. Keys can be limited by scope and by an optional IP allowlist, and all traffic uses HTTPS.
What should I do if my API key leaks?
Create a new key, update your website or application to use it, then revoke the old key in Dashboard → Developer → API keys. Check your delivery reports for any messages you did not send.
How do I know a webhook really came from SMSGELY?
Every webhook carries an SMSGELY-Signature header with an HMAC-SHA256 signature of the timestamp and raw body. Verify it with your webhook secret and reject requests older than five minutes.
