Bulk SMS

Bulk SMS campaigns for Bangladeshi businesses

Send one personalised message to hundreds or thousands of customers, members or students. See the cost before you send, schedule it for the right moment, and follow every delivery in the campaign report.

How it works

A campaign in four steps

The bulk SMS wizard in your dashboard walks you through each step, with a preview before anything is sent.
  1. Choose recipients

    Select contact groups, upload a CSV file or paste numbers. Bangladeshi numbers are normalised and duplicates removed.
  2. Write the message

    Start from a template or write a new message. Personalise with {{name}}, {{company}} or any CSV column.
  3. Check the preview

    See the number of recipients, SMS parts, encoding, skipped numbers and the estimated cost.
  4. Send or schedule

    Send immediately or pick a date and time in Bangladesh time. Then follow the campaign report.

Cost preview

Know the cost before you send

A bulk campaign is only as predictable as its cost. Before you confirm, the campaign preview shows how many recipients will actually be messaged, how many SMS parts the message uses, whether it is GSM-7 or Unicode, and the estimated total.

When you confirm, the estimated amount is reserved from your wallet. Each message is charged when the SMS provider accepts it. Messages that fail or are rejected before the provider accepts them are not charged, and their reservation is released. The campaign report shows both the estimated and the actual cost.

The biggest lever on cost is length. A Bangla message of 71 characters needs two parts instead of one, and a single emoji in an English message switches it from 160 characters per SMS to 70. Our guide to SMS character limits shows how to keep messages in fewer parts.

How the estimate is built

Recipients after skipping invalid, duplicate, blocked and opted-out numbers
R
SMS parts per message (GSM-7: 160 / 153 · Unicode: 70 / 67)
P
Your price per part (pricing)
৳
Estimated cost
R × P × ৳

With personalised messages, parts are counted per recipient, because names and other values change the length.

Best practices

Bulk SMS best practices

Bulk SMS works best when people are glad to receive it. These practices protect your reputation, keep costs down and help your messages get read.

Send only to people who agreed to hear from you

Use lists of your own customers, members or students who gave you their number and expect messages from you. Do not buy or scrape number lists — it breaks our Acceptable Use Policy, harms your brand and can lead to your sender ID being suspended.

Make opting out easy and respect it

In promotional messages, tell recipients how to stop receiving them, and act on every request. Once a number is blocked or opted out, SMSGELY skips it in future campaigns automatically and shows it in the skipped count — so a request honoured once stays honoured.

Identify yourself and get to the point

Use your approved masking sender ID where possible, or start the message with your business name. Put the key information first — the offer, the date, the amount — and finish with one clear action.

Send at a sensible time

We recommend sending promotional messages between 09:00 and 20:00 Bangladesh time, and following any stricter rules set by operators or regulators. Schedule campaigns in advance so they go out at the right moment even when you are busy.

Test before you send to everyone

Send the message to yourself and a colleague first. Check how variables render, how the message looks on a basic phone, and that any link works. Then send the full campaign.

Keep your list clean

After each campaign, review failed numbers in the report. Numbers that fail repeatedly may be inactive; removing them keeps your reports meaningful and your list accurate.

For a longer checklist, read bulk SMS best practices for Bangladeshi businesses and our SMS Policy.

Reports

Campaign reports

Every campaign has a report showing its status, the number of recipients and SMS parts, estimated and actual cost, and counts by message status — delivered, failed, pending and so on. Campaigns finish as completed, partially completed, failed or cancelled, and scheduled campaigns can be cancelled before they start.

Drill into the messages to see the status of each recipient, filter by status to find failures, and use the delivery reports to compare campaigns over time.

Bulk SMS API

Send campaigns from your own software

Create a campaign with up to 1,000 recipients per request by default, each with their own variables. Add an Idempotency-Key so a retried request never creates a second campaign. Full details are in the bulk SMS API reference.
curl -X POST https://<api-url-from-your-dashboard>/sms/bulk \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SMSGELY_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: eid-offer-2026-batch-1" \
  -d '{
    "name": "Eid offer",
    "sender": "YOURBRAND",
    "message": "Hi {{name}}, enjoy 20% off this Eid with code {{code}}.",
    "recipients": [
      { "to": "01712345678", "name": "Rahim", "code": "EID20R" },
      { "to": "01812345678", "name": "Karim", "code": "EID20K" }
    ],
    "scheduled_at": "2026-12-01T10:00:00+06:00"
  }'
Create a scheduled campaign. Cost values are illustrative.

FAQ

Bulk SMS questions

What is bulk SMS?

Bulk SMS means sending one message — often personalised — to many recipients at once. On SMSGELY, each bulk send is a campaign with its own recipients, cost estimate and delivery report.

How do I add recipients to a bulk campaign?

Choose one or more contact groups, upload a CSV file, or type or paste numbers. You can combine these sources; duplicate numbers are only messaged once. Developers can also create campaigns through the bulk SMS API.

How is the cost of a campaign calculated?

Each recipient’s message costs its number of SMS parts multiplied by your price per part. The campaign preview adds this up so you see the estimated total before you send. Messages that fail or are rejected before the network accepts them are not charged.

Can I send bulk SMS in Bangla?

Yes. Bangla messages are sent as Unicode, which fits 70 characters in a single SMS and 67 per part for longer messages. Keep Bangla campaigns concise to control the number of parts.

What happens to people who have opted out?

Numbers that are blocked or have opted out are skipped automatically and counted in the campaign summary. They are not messaged and not charged.

Can I schedule a bulk SMS campaign?

Yes. Choose a date and time in Bangladesh time when you create the campaign. Over the API, pass scheduled_at with a timezone offset such as +06:00.
